What is release paper?

Release paper (also called a release liner) is roll stock made by coating a paper base with a silicone release agent. The paper is first supercalendered (glassine) or extrusion-coated (PE-coated) to build strength, flatness and resistance to bleed-through, then siliconized on a five-roll coater, on one side or both, with release force controlled precisely through the formulation.

It belongs to the same family as release film; the difference is the base. A paper base gives stiffness, heat resistance and the ability to hold an embossed pattern, which is why it has long been the mainstay for label liners and synthetic-leather transfer coating, while a plastic base wins on transparency and strength. It is also a different thing from the "release layer" inside a hot stamping foil - release paper is finished roll stock you can buy on its own.

Base paper and surface - white grades lead the range

Label roll photograph: a label peeling off a white liner, with the liner structure clearly visible
A label roll on white glassine liner (actual product photo) - liner flatness and smooth release are what decide yield on a label line.

White glassine and white kraft PE-coated are the volume grades: white glassine goes into label liners, electronics die-cutting and medical products, while white kraft PE-coated serves EVA foam, double-sided tape, automotive sound-deadening parts and other processes that need bleed-through resistance.

Other base papers available include woodfree, coated and all-pulp stock. When a line needs to tell release force bands or work orders apart by color, glassine can be made in custom colors (six standard: white, blue, pale yellow, amber, green, red) - just note it on your enquiry.

Note: color is a made-to-order option; lead time and MOQ are confirmed by specification, and the actual shade is per the approved sample.

Frequently asked questions

Glassine or PE-coated - how do I choose?

Glassine has high internal strength and stays flat under die-cutting, which makes it the mainstream choice for label liners and die-cutting; PE-coated resists moisture and bleed-through, so it suits EVA foam, double-sided tape and automotive sound-deadening parts.

Can glassine be supplied in a specific color?

Yes. Six standard colors (white, blue, pale yellow, amber, green, red), with other colors made to order; color is commonly used to tell release force bands or work orders apart on the line.

Can you coat silicone on one side or both?

Yes. Five-roll siliconizing, single or double-sided, with release force set separately for each side.

Is there a minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on base paper, basis weight, color and release force. Please contact our sales team for the current figures.

How do I choose between release paper and release film?

Paper-based processes - label liners, synthetic-leather transfer coating - usually run release paper; when you need transparency, high strength or thermoforming, choose release film.

Need release paper samples?

Tell us your application, base paper and basis weight requirement, whether you need single or double-sided silicone, and any color - Lihyang will help you confirm the right specification, lead time and pricing, with free samples available.
