What is Cold Foil?

Cold foil is an innovative decorative technique that transfers metallic effects onto a substrate without the need for heat, distinguishing it from traditional hot stamping. The core principle involves the synergy between UV-curable adhesive and the metallic foil. During the printing process, a specially formulated UV adhesive is first applied to the desired areas using a screen, flexo, or offset printing unit. Subsequently, the cold foil (typically a PET film with a metallic layer) is pressed onto the adhesive-coated substrate. Under UV light, the adhesive instantly cures, firmly bonding the metallic layer of the cold foil to the substrate.

This non-contact, heat-free process allows for continuous, intricate foiling on high-speed printing presses, significantly boosting production efficiency and design flexibility.

Cold Foil vs Hot Foil

Cold foil and hot foil are two distinct decorative processes. The key characteristic of cold foil is its "cold" process, which eliminates the need for heated dies, relying instead on UV adhesive curing for image transfer. This enables seamless integration with high-speed printing presses, making it particularly suitable for continuous web materials. Its benefits include higher printing speeds, finer halftone foiling capabilities, lower tooling costs, and broader substrate compatibility.

In contrast, hot foil utilizes heat and pressure with metal dies, offering distinct advantages in tactile relief and metallic luster saturation.
