Why the automotive industry needs electroplating-free chrome

Chrome trim has always been a key way to signal perceived quality and brand language across automotive interiors and exteriors, but electroplated chrome now sits inside a structural regulatory phase-out window: the EU REACH restriction on chromium trioxide is expected to take full effect late 2027 to early 2028, and California's CARB has also set a phase-out timeline for decorative chrome plating.

For interior and exterior parts that still need a "chrome" appearance, electroplating-free solutions are entering a genuine adoption-evaluation window — and for converters that already run a hot stamping line, this is a low-equipment-threshold, selectively-applicable alternative path.

ABS, PC and PC+ABS are the primary compatible substrates; low-surface-energy materials such as PP require a matched adhesion layer or corona/flame treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is chrome foil suited to automotive parts?

Interior button rings, trim strips and emblems with flat to 2.5D geometry are suited to direct evaluation. Exterior parts are exposed to harsher sun, temperature/humidity and stone-chip conditions, so we recommend completing validation against the relevant OEM specification (e.g. xenon-arc SAE J2527, salt spray, damp-heat cycling) before moving to production.

Is this hexavalent chrome electroplating? Is it restricted under REACH or CARB?

No. This product deposits metallic chromium (Cr⁰) by vacuum deposition, a dry physical process that does not use hexavalent chromium chemicals. EU REACH restricts hexavalent chromium substances such as chromium trioxide used in electroplating; California's CARB has also set a phase-out timeline for decorative chrome plating — both target the electroplating process itself, a separate matter from this product's dry chromium film.

Can exterior automotive parts be adopted directly?

For exterior parts we recommend completing validation against the relevant OEM specification first (accelerated weathering, salt spray, damp-heat cycling, etc.) before evaluating production; interior parts see milder exposure conditions, so adoption evaluation is comparatively simpler.

What equipment is needed?

Standard hot stamping equipment is sufficient (flat-bed, silicone-die, roller or peripheral stamping); converters that already run a hot stamping line need no new equipment. We recommend a trial run against the parameter card for first-time adoption.
